The Washington Ireland Program inspires and develops promising leaders through an exceptional program committed to building a future of peace and prosperity for Northern Ireland and Ireland.

For almost three decades, the Washington Ireland Program (WIP) has played an important role in post-conflict Northern Ireland and Ireland by bringing together leaders from a wide range of communities and backgrounds for outstanding leadership and skills-development programs. WIP’s aim is to support, inspire and develop leaders who are committed to building a future of peace and prosperity for Northern Ireland and Ireland. WIP does this through programs of personal development, policy debate and community service & public discussion.  Through these programs, participants are challenged and equipped to reach their full potential in embodying the two core principles of WIP – service and leadership. WIP’s 800+ alums have taken up roles across society, particularly in public service and stay connected through an active Alum community.

Participants are challenged and equipped to reach their full potential while embodying the two core principles of the Washington Ireland Program – service and leadership.

Each year, WIP selects 30 talented students to join our expanding network of leaders and influencers by completing a 8-week program of service and leadership development.  Throughout the program, participants follow a crafted curriculum to develop and challenge them as leaders, both personally and professionally.

Some of the main opportunities are:

  • Leadership Curriculum to develop the student's skills and help them develop their goals for the future.
  • Alumni Mentorship Program.
  • Professional Skills Workshops.
  • An eight-week work project with a high profile U.S. organisation to develop your professional skills.
  • Exclusive Speaker Sessions with Global Leaders from the US, Ireland and Northern Ireland.
  • Leadership Curriculum to develop the student's skills and help them develop their goals for the future.
  • Alumni Mentorship Program.
  • Professional Skills Workshops.
  • Debates and Discussions about global issues and challenges facing our island.
  • Developing Policy Papers for their own innovative and ambitious ideas to tackle these issues.

WIP alumni are a diverse community of over 1000 accomplished ambassadors for the program. They share a deeply held commitment to look past differences and to resolve the pressing issues that will define the island of Ireland in the 21st century.

Today, they are excelling in roles across the political, business, legal, entrepreneurial, advocacy and cultural sectors on the island. They include Leo Varadkar (WIP 2000), the youngest Taoiseach in Ireland’s history; Claire Sugden (WIP 2010), who was appointed at the age of 29 as Northern Ireland’s Minister for Justice; and other rising stars like artist Adrian Margey (WIP 2005), Queen’s University Belfast Heaney Fellow Tara McEvoy (WIP 2014), and tech entrepreneur Aidan Corbett (WIP 2005).
